The idea to establish the Federation of African Pharmaceutical Manufactures Associations was born at the GIZ/United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) Conference on Local Production in April 2011 in Cape Town, South Africa. The regional pharmaceutical associations in attendance recognised that they shared common challenges and opportunities in the pharmaceutical generic medicines manufacturing sector in Africa. Collectively they would be able to share strategies to address the challenges and to strongly enhance the opportunities through advocacy. At a meeting held on 11 May 2012, the following 3 regional associations agreed to officially form the Federation of African Pharmaceutical Manufactures Associations (FAPMA):

  • Federation of East African Pharmaceutical Manufacturers (FEAPM),
  • Southern African Generic Medicines Association (SAGMA); and
  • West African Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association (WAPMA)

The Federation was officially inaugurated and publicly launched on 25 January 2013 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The following were finalised at the inaugural meeting
