The Southern African Generic Medicines Association, represents the interests of generic pharmaceutical manufacturers and wholesalers in the Southern African Development Community’s. The Association was formed on 3 December 2009 and officially launched on 4 April 2011. One of the major challenges confronting the public health system in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) is the non availability of the affordable essential quality generic medicines. Less than 50% of the population have access to essential medicines. More than 65% of all essential drugs used in the region are imported. Through SAGMA, the industry plans to contribute towards ensuring that the people in the SADC region have access to efficacious, affordable medicines
